A newborn baby was rescued from the rubble of her mother's home in northern Syria, still attached to her by her umbilical cord, a relative said.
According to Khalil al-Suwadi, the infant is the only member of her immediate family to survive the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Syria and neighboring Turkey and completely destroyed their home in the rebel-held town of Jindayris.
During the excavation, "we heard a voice," Suwadi told AFP on Tuesday.
After cleaning up the mess, we located the baby with an uncut umbilical cord; my cousin then took her to the hospital.
The footage of the rescue quickly became widely shared online.
The footage depicts a man running away from the wreckage of a four-story building while holding a tiny baby who is covered in dust.
A third man screams for a car to take the newborn to the hospital as a second man runs towards him carrying a blanket to protect the infant from the bitter cold.
