Israel's Prophetic Restoration Unfolding as new Israeli Embassy is Opened in Turkmenistan Near Iran Border

Foreign Minister Eli Cohen inaugurated Israel's new permanent embassy in Turkmenistan's capital of Ashbagat on Thursday, 20 kilometers (about 12 miles) from the Iranian border.

"Turkmenistan is an extremely important country in Central Asia and an energy powerhouse in a strategic location," Cohen said. "The opening of our permanent embassy today strengthens the relationship between the two countries and will encourage cooperation between the governments and between the economies in the fields of technology, agriculture and regional security," he added.

During his visit, Cohen met with Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamedow, the foreign minister, and agriculture minister. Ambassadors from other states such as the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan and the U.S., as well as representatives from the small Jewish community living in the country were also present at the ceremony.

Cohen was the first foreign minister since 1994 to visit the country (his predecessor was Shimon Peres). The new location of the embassy, a few kilometers from the border with Iran, is also intended to convey a strategic message.

At the end of May, Israeli President Isaac Herzog is also expected to visit Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani foreign minister is also planning to make a parallel visit to Israel against the backdrop of the opening of the embassy in Ramat Gan a few weeks ago, marking 30 years of diplomatic relations between the countries.

Beyond arms sales, the two countries' relationship is largely built on common concern over Iran's growing influence in the region. In Israel, diplomatic sources say that the tightening of relations with Azerbaijan will also lead to rapprochement with a series of other countries in Central Asia in the near future.
