Jeff Gray is a retired truck driver who served in the U.S. Army. He has been stopped, held, searched, and arrested by the police many times. What is he accused of? Holding signs—in front of city halls all over the United States.
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression filed two lawsuits on Tuesday on Gray's behalf to protect his First Amendment right to speak outside of government buildings. One was against the City of Alpharetta, Georgia, and two of its police officers and the other was against the police chief of the City of Blackshear, Georgia.
Gray said, "I've been harassed, trespassed on, handcuffed, and arrested many times for peacefully using my First Amendment rights." "I want to make sure that everyone in the U.S., from the richest millionaire to the poorest homeless person, can use these rights without worrying that our government will punish them.
