School district spells out rules for prayer in board meetings

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Charleston County School District could be including prayer into its school board meetings.

Monday evening, board members voted 5-4 in favor of a proposed policy amendment. This amendment would permit "wisdom and discernment" prayers to initiate special and regular board meetings.

However, there are certain conditions.

The amendment continues with additional prayer regulations.

The prayer or invocation must be nonsectarian
The prayer of invocation may only reference God or “The Almighty”.
The prayer or invocation may not invoke one religion in preference of others.
The prayer or invocation must be directed only at the board members themselves.
The prayer or invocation must precede public business and not be a part of public business.
In the Lowcountry, Dorchester District 2 opens their school board meetings with a prayer and Berkeley County School District has a moment of silence before their meetings.

All five candidates who voted in favor of the first reading were backed by the organization Moms for Liberty.

The amendment must go to a second reading before passed.
